One month, three countries
Here is a month for an American who moved to Spain, kept a US card and a student loan, and owns a flat in the UK. Borderless Budget connects all of it and adds the month up in euros, the currency the household actually lives in.
Copilot could connect the two US accounts and show them in dollars. The Spanish rent, the groceries and the UK council tax would be outside it, because it supports US accounts only.1
| Transaction | Spent | In euros |
|---|---|---|
| RentSpanish current account | €1,150.00 | €1,150.00 |
| GroceriesSpanish current account | €312.40 | €312.40 |
| Streaming subscriptionUS credit card | $15.49 | €13.34 |
| Student loan paymentUS checking account | $250.00 | €214.75 |
| Council tax on a UK flatUK current account | £142.00 | €163.26 |
| Spent this month | €1,853.75 |
Illustrative figures. Each foreign amount converts at the exchange rate for its own date, so a later move in the rate doesn't rewrite last month.
What happens to Copilot when you move
Copilot is plain about it: it “works with US-based accounts only.”1 Your US card and checking account keep syncing after a move. Your new current account in Lisbon or Berlin, your salary in euros, and your rent never show up.
That leaves the usual workaround: Copilot for the US half, a spreadsheet or a banking app for the rest, and a calculator to put them together. Copilot itself only supports USD and doesn't convert foreign currency transactions.4 It works until the exchange rate moves.
One budget across both countries
Borderless Budget connects bank accounts in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Where a bank isn't supported, CSV import and manual accounts cover it, in any currency.
You choose a home currency, and every transaction converts to it at the exchange rate for its own date, with the original amount kept beside it. Categories, budgets, recurring charges and net worth all work across currencies, so your US subscriptions and your European rent land in the same budget.
Price and sharing
Copilot is $13 a month or $95 a year, with a 1-month free trial.2 To share with a partner, you both log in to the same account, and each device gets full control.3
Borderless Budget has a 30-day free trial, then costs $10 a month or $99 a year, billed in USD, with every feature and up to 10 connected banks included.5 Each household member gets their own login. More on that on the couples page.
