Four steps
Export your plan from YNAB
In YNAB, open the plan menu and choose Export Plan. YNAB downloads a zip.
Upload it to Borderless Budget
In the web app, go to Transactions, open More actions and choose Import from YNAB. Upload the zip as it is, or just the Register file inside it.
Check what's coming in
Each YNAB account is listed with how many transactions will import and how many are skipped. Each one goes into a New account named after it, or into one of your manual accounts if you pick one. Untick any account you'd rather leave behind. The currency is filled in from your amounts, and if your dates could be read day first or month first, you choose which. Nothing is saved until you import.
Import
Each account shows how many transactions came in, and a count of duplicates skipped. To import the same file again, pick the account it went into last time, and anything already there is skipped, not doubled.
Your categories come with you
Every YNAB category comes across. If you already have a category with the same name, transactions go there. If you don't, it's created, in a group named after its YNAB category group.
| In YNAB | In Borderless Budget |
|---|---|
| MercadonaEveryday Expenses: Groceries | Goes to your Groceries category. If you don't have one, it's created in an Everyday Expenses group. |
| Acme PayrollInflow: Ready to Assign | Counts as income. |
| Transfer : Savings | Gets no category, so it can be matched with the other side as a transfer between your accounts. |
What's left out
Some rows in a YNAB export aren't spending or income. They're counted as skipped on the review step, account by account:
- Starting Balance rows. They're YNAB's opening balance, not income.
- Scheduled transactions dated after today.
- Rows with an amount of zero.
Your YNAB memos and flags stay in YNAB, and so do the amounts you assigned to each category.
Then add the rest of your money
Once your history is in, connect your accounts in the countries we support and see every currency in one budget. The first 30 days are free.
