Cash vs. card culture
In the ECB's 2024 study, Lithuania had the highest share of online payments by number in the euro area, at 29%3. Direct debits are not available, but e-invoices with automatic payments do the same job3.
Cost of Living in Lithuania
| Category | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Rent | Around €350 to €500/month for a one-room flat and €600 to €800 for a two-room flat in neighbourhoods near central Vilnius, according to a 2026 university housing guide4 |
| Groceries | Lithuania's standard VAT rate is 21%, with reduced rates for items such as public transport and books5. Track three or four weeks of supermarket receipts before you set this line. |
| Transport | €38 for a 30-day Vilnius public transport ticket, €35 for weekdays only, or €1 for a 30-minute single ticket6 |
| Healthcare | Employees pay 19.5% social security contributions, which include 6.98% for compulsory health insurance7 |
For a local yardstick, a full-time employee in Lithuania earned an average of €2,480 a month before tax, or €1,514 after tax, in late 20258. Set your rent and grocery lines against those numbers rather than against prices back home.
Currency Considerations
The litas was fixed at €1 = LTL 3.45280 when Lithuania switched to the euro1, so euro prices are all you deal with now. Prices still move: annual inflation was 3.8% in 20258. If you're paid in dollars or pounds, the exchange rate and local inflation both change what a month in Lithuania costs you, even when your habits stay the same.
Transferring money to Lithuania
- Inside the EU, euro transfers can now arrive within 10 seconds, at the same cost as a regular transfer or less9. Moving money between your own euro accounts is quick, so you don't need to keep a large buffer in each one.
- If you earn in dollars or pounds, compare the exchange rate your bank offers with a specialist transfer service before each conversion. A small difference in the rate adds up over a year of transfers.
- Convert a month of euro spending in one go rather than paying for many small conversions. Rent, the transport ticket and utilities are all predictable, so the amount is easy to set.
- Keep home-country bills in their own currency, paid from your home account, so a conversion never lands on the same day a bill is due.
Borderless Budget tracks all of your accounts, your home-country bank, your Lithuanian bank, and services like Wise or Revolut, in a single dashboard. Exchange rates update daily, so your budget always reflects where things actually stand.
Tax Considerations for Expats in Lithuania
- You count as a Lithuanian tax resident if, among other tests, you stay in Lithuania for 183 or more days in the tax year10.
- Lithuanian tax residents are taxed on worldwide income. From 2026, most income is taxed at 20% up to €83,237 a year, 25% from €83,237 to €138,729, and 32% above that11.
- Annual income tax returns for residents are due by 1 May of the following year, and so is any tax still owed12.
- The US taxes its citizens and resident aliens on worldwide income from all sources, wherever they live, and offers the foreign earned income exclusion and foreign tax credit13.
- The United States and Lithuania have an income tax treaty14.
Budgeting Tips for Expats in Lithuania
- Budget your Lithuanian life in euros. Rent, groceries and the transport ticket are all in EUR, and converting each one back to your home currency adds noise, not clarity.
- If you only commute on weekdays, the weekdays-only 30-day ticket is €35 instead of €386. Pick the one that matches how you actually travel.
- Recurring bills can be paid through e-invoices with automatic payments, since direct debits are not available3. Check each one monthly, so a changed amount doesn't slip through unnoticed.
- Ask a landlord which utilities are included in the rent, and how much the bills ran last winter. Budget for the winter months, not the average.
- Ask about the deposit before you sign, and keep enough euros on hand to pay it and the first month's rent together.
- Keep a separate line for exchange-rate costs if your income is not in euros. It shows how much the conversion itself takes each month.
